Békés is a city in Békés County in the Körösök region, just ten kilometers from Békéscsaba and the center of Békés district. Though no longer the county seat today, it once played a defining role in the region's life. Its history stretches back to the Árpád period, but it was depopulated during the Ottoman occupation and later resettled in subsequent centuries.
